How Word works
Guess the five-letter word in at most six tries. Every guess has to be a real word.
After every guess the letters colour in: green is the right letter in the right spot, yellow is in the word but in a different spot, grey is not in the word.
Watch out for double letters: a letter only colours as often as it appears in the word. There's a new word every day at midnight, the same one for everyone.
Frequently asked questions
Which words are accepted?
Every guess is checked against a large English word list of five-letter words. The word of the day itself is always a common word — no obscure entries.
What exactly do the colours mean?
Green: right letter in the right spot. Yellow: the letter is in the word, but somewhere else. Grey: the letter is not in the word (that often).
Is it the same word for everyone each day?
Yes. Everyone guesses the same word on the same day, so you can compare results fairly — the share grid never spoils it.
